Rate limiting
In short and in plain language
Rate limiting counts how often one sender sends something.
If it is too often in a short time, the server stops taking it.
This way a form slows down programs that send lots of messages.
The limit should be high enough for real customers to get through.
Definition
Rate limiting sets how many requests a server accepts from one sender within a certain time. On contact forms it slows down mass submissions by bots. The limit should be generous enough that genuine enquiries are not turned away.
